The Cheney Care Center is owned and operated by the Cheney Care Center Association; a not-for-profit 501(c) 3, community organization committed to meeting the health care and shelter needs of the elderly within our service area.

The Association was formed in 1976 by a dedicated, conscientious group of individuals from the Cheney community who saw a need for long-term health care in our area and determined that they would build a skilled nursing facility. Their impetus came in the mid 1970’s when the State of Washington closed the for profit nursing home in Cheney. These community members spearheaded a fund raising drive for the money necessary to start construction of the Care Center. They raised $330,000 and the Cheney Care Center was able to accept its first resident in September 1979 at its’ current location. The Care Center became Medicare certified September 1989. In 1993, they started Cheney Home Care, a non-medical personal care agency providing services in area homes, helping elders continue to live in the comfort of their own home. From 1990-1994, another community volunteer fundraising effort raised $440,000 and expanded the Cheney Care Center to provide dementia care in the Special Support Unit, a secure separate wing of the main skilled building. In 1999, through a $5.2 million dollar offering of tax-exempt bonds, the Cheney Assisted Living was opened and the Cheney Care Center was completely renovated. The Cheney Assisted Living facility has 28 individual apartment units providing assistance with activities of daily living services. In 2001, the organization began providing Meals on Wheels to the West Plains of Spokane County and took over operation of the Senior Nutrition Meal Site in Cheney. In an effort to provide for the housing needs of seniors in our area and to fulfill the vision of the founding Board of Directors, we started to pursue senior apartments in 2002. Through the help of Community Frameworks and many other organizations, especially the supporters in Cheney, we opened the Sessions Village Senior Housing project in the summer of 2005. This affordable housing project provides individual apartments for seniors in a campus setting. We owe our existence and continued progress to the dedicated efforts of many citizens throughout the Cheney community. These individuals cared about people and gave of their time, talents, and financial resources. This same tradition of caring and giving characterizes everything we do. We acknowledge the community’s past involvement and recognize that its support is vital for our future. A seven (7) member volunteer Board of Directors serves without any compensation and governs all we do.
